The Independence Lab
There are few life transitions as major as graduating from college and pursuing a career.
As young women, we tend to worry: Will we get a good job? Will I be good at it? How will I adjust to my new schedule? Will I still have time for my friends and family? Where do I even begin with my finances?
Even before my commencement ceremony, I had moved to NYC to pursue my dream of being a magazine editor. This meant that I was starting a new job in a new city, far from home. I experienced all of these emotions and more.
But with some trial and error, I landed on my feet and have a career I am proud of.
That is why I want to share my lessons learned.

What Does 'Live Independently' Mean to Me?
I have a fierce belief in independence.
Independence is more than a goal—it's a right every woman deserves, whether it's through financial freedom, career growth, or emotional resilience. Your version of independence may differ from mine, and that's the beauty of it.
To me, it means my own career and financial independence that creates the freedom to choose how I spend my time. It means a loving family and a spouse who supports me.
Your independent life may look very different from mine, but so long as we choose our life, that is what matters.
Why Live Independently?
Living independently is more than just a lifestyle choice; it is a commitment to personal growth and self-discovery. It means taking control of your life, making decisions that align with your values, and building a future that you are proud of. By mastering the skills to live independently, you are investing in your ability to thrive in any situation.
Skills to Live Independently By
Mastering independence starts with five essential pillars. Each of these areas empowers you to create a life on your terms:
Career Growth
Building a career that supports your goals is essential. Seek opportunities for growth, network strategically, and never stop learning.
Financial Literacy
Understanding how to manage your money is crucial. From budgeting to investing, financial literacy empowers you to make informed decisions that secure your future.
Emotional Intelligence
Developing emotional resilience and self-awareness allows you to navigate life's challenges with grace and confidence.
Self Care
Prioritizing your mental and physical health ensures that you have the energy and mindset to pursue your dreams.
Healthy Home
Cultivate a space where you feel comfortable, safe and ready to take on the world.
My Career Journey
Through competitive dance, I learned the power of discipline and passion early on. These lessons propelled me into my dream career in journalism and later into marketing.
I left for New York City before I even received my diploma to work at the company that published Dance, Dance Spirit and American Cheerleader. I worked my way up to managing editor (second in command!) before heading back to Ohio to pursue new dreams.
I ended up in marketing, becoming the first content manager at a digital marketing agency called Kuno Creative. I built a new content marketing department, then saw how I could help grow the company in other ways. I was promoted to VP of Operations, and I have been in that role since, not only working to grow the company, but helping people achieve professional and personal growth.
Why I am Sharing My Stories
In 2008-2009, when the whole economy seemed to change overnight, I was living in NYC. The financial crash changed the job market for many millennials. I watched as friends left the city after losing their jobs, often going back to live with their parents. They had to take jobs that were never part of their plans.
Now we are seeing that repeating with COVID and ever-growing inflation. If you're navigating the uncertainties of today's world, my experiences can offer you a roadmap to building your own independent life—no matter the economic climate.
I am sharing my stories here with a pure heart. They are not meant to direct, shame or insist my ways are best. They are examples of what can work when we think, “What does live independently mean?”
Why now? I believe I have always had the skills and intuition to go far. But now I have the experience to go further—and that’s what I can share.
My goal is to share my real experiences as a form of education, and hopefully inspire women to live independently.
