# Interviews Have Changed This Year (Here's What You Need to Know)

I remember when interviews were about verifying what someone knew. You grilled them on frameworks, tools, past projects. Knowledge was scarce back then, so knowledge was the test.

 More make up

I remember when interviews were about verifying what someone knew. You grilled them on frameworks, tools, past projects. Knowledge was scarce back then, so knowledge was the test.

Now AI can recall facts faster than any human. Every early-career candidate has access to the same tutorials and certifications. Same free courses, same YouTube tutorials, same certificate on the same LinkedIn profile.

Knowledge is table stakes.

📣 What separates candidates now is different: Communication. Coachability. Adaptability. Curiosity.

Every one of those is something a machine can't do for you in a live room.

By the end of this, you'll know what interviewers are actually scoring while you're busy answering the question, and why the smartest person in the room keeps losing the offer.

You'll also know how to highlight each of these four things instead of hoping they kinda sorta shine through.

## You've been prepping for the wrong test

I know that's annoying to hear, because the prep is the part you can control. More frameworks. More STAR stories. More company research at 11pm.

But the interview stopped being a knowledge test. It became a character test.

Anyone can look up the framework. So the question the interviewer is actually asking has changed. It's no longer "does this person know the thing."

It's:

Can this person learn and implement new things?

Every question about a past project, a conflict, a failure, a win is really asking, “Can this person learn?” underneath.

Most people hear "character test" and think it means being nice, or being humble, or being a good culture fit in some vague, personality-based way. It doesn't.

It means proving you're the kind of person who can take feedback without it becoming a thing. And the type of person who doesn't just bring problems, but brings solutions. And the type of person who isn't scared to try the new thing.

That's a learnable skill. It's also the fastest way to stand out when everyone around you has the same credentials.

Your resume gets you the room. Four signals get you the offer. Let's go through them.

## The Four Signals, And How To Show Each One

Grace McCarrick (@graceforpersonalityhires) has a [video with 2 million views](https://www.tiktok.com/@graceforpersonalityhires/video/7660209698817330445) sharing the unfortunate truth: baseline interpersonal skills aren't being taught.

Phone calls used to be the default, so every kid got reps. They answered the landline, called a friend's house and had to talk to their parents first, and talked to a stranger because there was no other option. Then texting and DMs replaced the phone, and those reps disappeared.

This disappearing skill is teachable, though, and you're already smart enough to learn it. You just have to practice it...on purpose...instead of hoping it happens.

These four signals, done well, will do more for your career (and personal growth) than another round of flashcards.

### 📞 1. Communication: close the loop, don't just answer

Most candidates answer the question and stop. Then there's a small silence and the interviewer moves on.

Close the loop instead. Answer, then add one line that connects your answer back to what they asked.

If they ask how you handle competing deadlines, don't just tell the story. End it with the point. "So that's why I now ask about priorities in the first week instead of waiting for something to slip."

**It tells them you know WHY they asked the question. And that is frickin' dynamite during an interview.**

### 🧍‍♀️ 2. Coachability: invite the correction

We often forget that we, as candidates, can ask questions during interviews. So nobody really does it. But it can make a HUGE difference.

After a longer answer, ask something that makes feedback easy to give. "Was that the level of detail you wanted, or should I go deeper on the technical part?"

It shows you can be steered.

It gives the interviewer permission to engage instead of just taking notes.

And when you are providing answers to the interviewer's questions, remember:

**The biggest interview cheat code is understanding that hiring managers listen to how you talk about difficult situations: Do you get defensive, or do you reflect? Do you blame, or do you take ownership?**

"What I'd do differently next time is..."

"I realized I could have handled that differently."

"I made a mistake there, and here's what I learned from it."

Notice none of those are confessions. They're proof of learning.

### 🌿 3. Adaptability: name the pivot

Have one story ready where the plan changed and *you* changed with it.

Not a story where everything went well. A story where something broke, you noticed, and you adjusted.

"We had a plan. It wasn't working by week two, so I changed the approach and here's what happened."

**Managers are hiring for the unscripted parts of the job: the moments when the brief is wrong. The client changes their mind. The tool breaks and everyone looks around the room.**

You can't script your way through those. You have to think on your feet.

That's what I'm listening for in an interview. Not the polished answer you rehearsed. The moment you go off script and show me how your brain actually works.

So when they ask about a hard project, don't give them the clean version. Tell them where it went sideways. Tell them what you did when it did.

A script gets you through the easy questions. Knowing how you think gets you the offer.

*PS: If you want to practice the answers that hold up when they push past the script, [schedule a mock interview](https://theindependencelab.com/mock-interview).*

### 🙋‍♀️ 4. Curiosity: ask about the problem, not the perks

You've heard "always ask questions at the end." Here's the part that's usually missing:

Ask about what the team is stuck on, not what the job offers you.

**Something like "What's the hardest part of this role right now?" or "What would make my first 90 days a success?"**

Those questions tell the interviewer you're already thinking about the work instead of the title. And they usually get you a real answer, which gives you something to respond to.

## Practice out loud, on camera

None of this works if the first time you say it out loud is in the interview.

Fifteen minutes. Answer five common opener questions, record the weakest one, and watch yourself back.

You will hear filler you didn't know you had. You'll catch the moment your voice goes up at the end of a sentence. You'll see the face you make when you're thinking.

[*My Interview Warm-Up Guide walks you through this process.*](https://theindependencelab.com/interviewwarmup)

This is the part people skip, and it's the part that changes everything. You can't fix what you can't see.

📣 Skills get you in the room. But self-awareness gets you the offer.

Most of all, trust yourself.
💜 Brianne

PS: If you want the 20 questions that trip people up most and a framework for answering each one, that's what my Interview Q&A Framework Guide is for.

It comes with access to my AI answer grader, so you can practice out loud and get feedback before you're in the room. It's worth so much more (Theresa called it the “best guide ever”), but I know you are literally looking for a job and don't have a ton of mola right now, so it's only $27 and [you can get it here](https://theindependencelab.com/interviewminikit).
