Why Gen Z Needs Emotional Intelligence More Than Ever

In a recent conversation on the Thrive Careers Podcast, we talked about how Gen Z is entering a workplace full of noise: job market uncertainty, automation anxiety, burnout, and misleading advice about what it really takes to succeed.

The EQ Success Method: 5 Skills You Can Start Building Today

Set an alarm on your phone three times a day to ask yourself, “How am I feeling?” This will help you get in the habit of identifying your emotions and recognizing how they affect your work, interactions, and focus.

Whether you’re in an interview or speaking up in a meeting, practice box breathing (inhale for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4) to stay calm. If you're caught off guard, it's OK to pause and ask for clarification. That pause could be the most powerful thing you do.

3. Social Intelligence

Look beyond the org chart. Who holds influence in your workplace? Who leads with trust? Learn to observe how communication flows and how decisions are made. When you understand the context, you can contribute more effectively.

4. Strategic Conversations

Strong communicators are prepared communicators. Whether you’re negotiating a salary, pitching an idea, or asking for feedback, be specific, thoughtful, and intentional. Always connect your impact to the goals of the team or organization.

5. Smart Money Moves

Financial stress is one of the biggest blockers to emotional stability. Start with the basics: build an emergency fund, pay off high-interest debt, and understand your paycheck. Confidence at work grows when your finances aren’t holding you back.

Promotions Don’t Come From Just Working Hard

The best piece of advice I ever received? Learn what your boss needs and provide it.

Early in my career, I was promoted not because I asked for it, but because I was already doing the work. I filled in gaps, volunteered for hard projects, and looked at the company’s challenges like they were my own.

If you want to advocate for yourself, start by showing up in ways that matter. Make your work undeniable.

The Secret to Getting Noticed Isn’t in the Job Description

Most hiring managers aren’t looking for perfection. They’re looking for someone who shows curiosity and confidence.

You might not meet every bullet point in a job listing, but if you come in ready to learn and equipped with a few powerful stories, especially ones that show how you’ve grown, you’ll be ahead of 90% of applicants.

If you're in college, use this time to build those stories. Volunteer. Intern. Say yes to the first meeting. You never know where it could lead.
