WHAT SENIORS ACTUALLY FEAR ABOUT “POST-GRAD” AND HOW TO GET AHEAD OF IT

I used to think I was scared of graduating because getting a 'big-girl' job seemed intimidating. But when I look back, that's not what I was nervous about. It was all the unsaid things...the ones we don't talk about out loud.

I used to think I was scared of graduating because getting a 'big-girl' job seemed intimidating. But when I look back, that's not what I was nervous about. It was all the unsaid things...the ones we don't talk about out loud.

Really, I knew I was walking into a whole new life where I had no clue what I was doing or what the next step should be.

And even more frightening was that I was walking into it alone. My friends were headed in different directions. My professors couldn't tell me what to do. My parents wouldn't even be in the same state as me anymore.

I was headed into something brand new, and as exciting as it was, it was utterly terrifying.

Most seniors believe they are nervous about their first job. But you have prepared for that. It's all the intangible parts of life that can really make you tremble.

So let’s talk about what seniors are actually afraid of when they think about post-grad life.

And more importantly, how to get ahead of all of it.

Fear one: losing your friend group.

You’ve had built-in community for four years. No everyone is heading into their own respective career paths, potentially in cities across the country.

But that doesn't mean your friendships are over.

Keep relationships healthy by planning weekly touch points now, not after everyone scatters.

And start building new connections in the city you want to move to.

Fear two: having no idea who you are without school structure.

No more syllabi, no more assignments or class schedules. The future as a vast plain of open opportunity, and it can be both inspiring and overwhelming at the same time.

So start experimenting before you graduate.

Try routines. Try hobbies. Try waking up without Canvas telling you what’s due by midnight.

Determine the routines you want to be a part of your daily life, then work to make them stick.

Fear three: being behind.

Behind on jobs. Behind on money. Behind on life.

Want to get ahead?

Make a plan for your job search.

Make a budget for your move.

And remember that “behind” just means “not on someone else’s timeline,” which actually sounds like freedom.

Fear four: making the wrong choice.

Remember your first job is not your final form.

If you hate it, you pivot. Adults do this constantly. (I went from journalism to marketing to operations.) Nobody bursts into flames.

Failure is just a datapoint, so treat it as such. No decision is a wrong decision if you learn from it.

If you are feeling nervous about graduation. This is normal. Take the time to self reflect and better understand what's really got you worked up. Once you can name it, you can overcome it.

If this resonated, forward this to a friend who needs the reminder.

And most of all, trust yourself.
